Why Do Windows Have Weepholes?

Have you ever seen the holes on your window, right where your window sill edge meets the portion of your window closest to the exterior and wondered what they were and what they are used for?

Those are weepholes and they serve a variety of purposes!

Windows have weepholes for several important reasons. Weepholes are these small openings at the bottom of a window frame. They might even seem insignificant, but they play a crucial role in keeping our homes safe and dry.

The main reason windows have weepholes is to allow water to drain out. Rainwater, condensation, or even snow can find their way into the window frame. Without weepholes, this water would get trapped inside. Over time, the trapped water could cause serious damage. It might lead to mold growth, which is harmful to our health. It could also cause the window frame (or area below it) to rot or rust, depending on the material. By providing an escape route for the water, weepholes prevent these problems.

Weepholes also help with ventilation. Ventilation means allowing air to move through a space. When air can flow through the window frame, it helps to dry out any moisture that might be inside. This is especially important for preventing condensation. Condensation happens when warm, moist air hits a cold surface, like a window. Without proper ventilation, this moisture would stay inside the window frame, potentially leading to mold and mildew.

By allowing water to escape and air to circulate, weepholes help prevent damage to both the window and the surrounding walls. Water can be very destructive if it gets into places it shouldn’t be. It can cause paint to peel, wood to warp, and even damage the foundation of a building. Weepholes direct the water away from these sensitive areas, helping to keep the structure of the house intact.

Windows are not just for letting in light and fresh air. They also help keep our homes insulated. Insulation means keeping the inside temperature steady, regardless of the weather outside. When water gets trapped in a window frame, it can affect the insulation properties of the window. This means the window won’t be as good at keeping the cold out in the Winter or the heat out in the Summer. By allowing water to drain away, weepholes help maintain the window’s insulation properties, making our homes more energy-efficient.

Weepholes need to be kept clear to work properly. Sometimes, dirt, leaves, or insects can block them. If this happens, water can’t drain out, and all the challenges we talked about can start to occur. It’s important to check the weepholes regularly and clear away any blockages. This is usually a simple task that involves cleaning around the window frame and making sure the holes are open.

Almost all types of windows can have weepholes, including sliding windows, casement windows, and double-hung windows. No matter the style, the purpose of weepholes remains the same: to protect the window and the home from water damage.

Weepholes are small but mighty features of our windows. They provide essential drainage and ventilation, preventing water damage and helping to keep our homes safe and comfortable. By directing water away from the window frame and the building, weepholes play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the window and the structure of the home. Regular maintenance to keep these holes clear is important to ensure they function properly.

The next time you look at your windows, remember that those little holes at the bottom are doing a big job!
