What Is ‘Durock’ And What Is It Used For?

When installing tile, it is important to fasten it to a surface with a particular set of qualities that make the tile installation most likely to last for as long as possible without developing some type of an issue.

The best “backer board” of this type that I have come across is a product that I refer to as ‘Durock’.

‘Durock’ is a brand name for a specific type of cement board, often called cement backer board.

It is made by the company USG (United States Gypsum Company).

Unlike drywall, which is made from gypsum and paper, Durock is made from a mix of cement and reinforcing fibers. This makes it much stronger and more resistant to water and damage.

Durock is mainly used as a base layer for tile.

You will often find it behind tile in places like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

It is especially useful in areas that get wet, such as showers, tub surrounds, and floors near sinks. Because it does not break down when exposed to moisture, it helps prevent mold, mildew, and rot.

One of the biggest benefits of Durock is its durability.

Regular drywall can soften, swell, or even fall apart when it gets wet.

Durock, on the other hand, stays solid.

This makes it a reliable surface for holding heavy materials like ceramic tile, porcelain tile, or even natural stone.

It creates a strong, stable base that helps keep tiles from cracking or coming loose over time.

Another important feature of Durock is that it is not considered waterproof, but it is water-resistant.

This means it will not be damaged by water, but it can still allow moisture to pass through it.

Because of this, builders often add a waterproof barrier behind or on top of the Durock in wet areas. This extra layer helps protect the structure of the home from water damage.

Durock is also fire-resistant, which adds another layer of safety.

Cement-based materials do not burn like wood or paper products.

While this is not usually the main reason people choose it, it is still a helpful benefit, especially in certain building situations.

When installing Durock, it is usually screwed into wood or metal framing, similar to how drywall is installed.

The seams between boards are taped with special mesh tape and covered with thin-set mortar. This helps create a smooth, even surface for tile installation.

Once that is done, tile can be applied directly on top using mortar.

Cutting Durock is a bit different from cutting drywall.

Instead of just using a utility knife, it often requires scoring and snapping or using a saw with a special blade. This process can create dust, so wearing a mask and eye protection is important during cutting.

Durock is commonly used by contractors and homeowners who want a long-lasting tile installation.

It is especially popular in remodeling projects where moisture is a concern.

While it may cost a little more than drywall, it can save money in the long run by preventing damage and repairs.

Durock is a tough, water-resistant board that provides a strong foundation for tile.

It helps protect walls and floors in wet areas and ensures that tile installations last for many years.

Installing tile is far from an easy task.

Using Durock as the backer of its installation, however, should instill confidence that the tile job that is being undertaken is set on a strong foundation that will serve as the base for a job that looks and remains beautiful for years to come.
